About
Marat “Morik” Danilyan is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, drawing and large-scale murals. He began working with graffiti in the late 1990s. His early experiments with lettering, spray paint and urban space laid the foundation for a practice that gradually expanded into canvas painting and a broader engagement with materials, surfaces and scale.
His work is rooted in close observation of everyday life. Family routines, encounters with strangers and the ways people inhabit their surroundings provide recurring sources of inspiration. Travel offers further opportunities to observe unfamiliar places and the small gestures, habits and interactions that give them character. Through his own photographs and drawings, Marat gathers a personal archive of images and impressions that often becomes the starting point for his work.
Collage is central to this process. He fragments and rearranges what he has observed, bringing figures, objects and architectural details into new relationships. These compositions become a basis for paintings and murals, where recognisable imagery meets geometric abstraction, expressive marks and layered textures. Rather than documenting a particular moment, his works transform lived experience into open-ended narratives, inviting viewers to make their own connections.
Moving between intimate drawings and architectural surfaces, Marat works with acrylic and oil on canvas, and with both spray paint and brush-applied paint in his murals. Pencil and pen drawing have long been integral to his practice. Alongside his established practice, he is experimenting with ink, exploring its possibilities for line, tone and texture. His growing interest in ceramics extends this material exploration into three dimensions, opening new ways of working with form and surface while painting, drawing and murals remain central to his work.
Marat was born in Novosibirsk, Russia, and is currently based in Prague, Czech Republic.
